The Journalism Association of Community Colleges awards Derek Villanueva 1st Place in Editorial Cartooning for 2009.
In April, the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) awarded Derek E. Villanueva first place in 2009’s Mail-in Winners for his editorial cartoon submission. Derek happens to be one of many cartoonists and graphic designer attending Los Angeles City College’s Journalism program. The current West Hollywood resident placed third place in 2008 for his depiction of then, presidential contender Hillary R. Clinton’s defeat to the White House, called “The Defeat of the Clinton Machine.”
Recently, the cartoonist has received negative criticism from the Rainbow Alliance group for his editorial illustration featured in the campus newspaper, Collegian (Volume 160, Number 4) satirizing Iowa’s Supreme Court decision to overturn the ban on same-sex marriage, called “Cornholy Matrimony.”
