Evangelical Volunteers project their message to West Hollywood residents

By Derek Villanueva

Evangelical volunteers positioned themselves at 10:00 A.M. on all four corners of Santa Monica Boulevard and Fairfax April 9, 2008. Organizer James Broman and six other demonstrators, three whom appeared to be young adults, lifted their yellow signs directed towards traffic and pedestrians walking about.

At first, James Broman asked not to be interviewed, due to the recent backlash Prop 8 supporters faced. “I just want a fair square deal regarding coverage,” said Broman.

Broman considers himself a ‘Bible-believing Christian,’ and not as an individual promoting a single religious group. He had no comment on why he chose this area to deliver his message but mentioned that his small group of volunteers  have been in several busy intersections in the Los Angeles County over the last week. When asked regarding the recent same-sex marriage outcomes in both Iowa and Vermont, he stated:

“Folks know what is right and wrong. We all have a conscience. If folks want to choose a lifestyle of sin, or whatever; or if they decide to make up their own rules, they will face the consequences in the end.”

All six poster bearing members happen to be related.  Broman only disclosed on his point of view regarding the reason for being out in one of West Hollywood’s busiest intersections.  The other five volunteers chose to let Broman speak-out on their behalf.

“We are a reminder to folks that this is what the bible teaches us,” said Broman.

Broman stands next to a box filled with paperback bibles available for anyone to take. After photographing the box next to him, he mentioned that he wasn’t “recruiting”, or “soliciting” his Evangelical Church from Arcadia, but rather took the time out of his schedule to deliver his own message.
